Model Replacement: Replaces Motorola DP1400

The Motorola R2 has been created to replace the Motorola DP1400. It is quite a surprise that Motorola has brought out a replacement and not swapped all the parts. The 2-pin audio port for the accessories are still compatible giving you the option to recycle existing parts. Also the chargers can also be used which you have previously purchased for the DP1400.

Key Motorola R2 Features Explained:

Lone Worker Feature

Lone worker is a great feature for security staff and any business where the individuals are working alone. It all starts from programming you pick a specific time period and when the radio is turned on it will count down e.g. 25 minutes. Every 25 minutes the radio will start to bleep for 1 minute. The user then presses the presell to reset the timer. If the user does not reset the timer a pre-determined signal which you choose either destress call, pre-canned text message or alarm is activated to other users or a supervisor in the area. A very simple solution that helps your workforce and if you have any doubt keeps them awake during the night shift as the timer keeps resetting until you deactivate it. You do not have to have it configured on all radios. It can be programmed on key roles which are higher risk e.g. Security Guard covering the back gate.

Lone Worker is built-in to the Motorola DP1400

Privacy Settings on Radios (Encryption)

The main advantage with digital radios these days it is far easier to reduce the amount people listening to your communications. Analogue radios used to use a scrambler or an option board in the most basic sense change or reverse what voice messages were coming over the air. It was not affective.

Motorola Digital Radios have 3 levels of privacy. Different Series have different capabilities as standards.

Basic Digital Privacy

8 Bit Encryption key – A fixed key programmed in the radio, 255 possible keys both radios require the same key to talk to each other. It prevents the basic listener from hearing your calls.

Basic Digital Privacy is built-in to the Motorola DP1400

Voice Activation (VOX)

VOX allows the user to transmit on their radio simply by using their voice. There is no need to press the Pressel this frees up the hands so they can multi-task at the same time. The feature can be turned on and off via a button and you can purchase VOX capability audio accessories like headsets that can assist you further. Normal Accessories would require a PTT button to be pressed before the Microphone opens but VOX by-passes this need.

VOX is built-in to the Motorola DP1400 and can be configured during programming.

Channel Scanning

Channel Scanning enables you to monitor several channels and respond when a message comes through. You can preselect the channels in your scan list, the fewer the channels the faster it scans. The radio will flick through the channels without you knowing waiting for a transmission on any of the channels. Once a signal is received your radio will transmit as normal.

With digital radios you can scan both analogue and digital channels simultaneously.

Channel Scanning is built-in to the Motorola DP1400.

Digital has many advantages over analogue:

  1. Clearer Audio.
  2. Integrated data applications.
  3. 40% longer battery life over analogue for extended work shifts.
  4. Increased capacity - twice the number of users for the price of one frequency licence.
  5. Enhanced digital calling and signalling.

Clearer Audio

  • Better basics - improved digital audio quality
  • Clearer voice communications over a greater range
  • Static and noise rejection - digital receivers reject any error signals, permitting improved audio in loud environments

40% Longer Battery Life

MOTOTRBO digital two-way portable radios can operate up to 40% longer between recharges compared to typical analog radios.

IMPRES batteries offer robust, optimized battery cycle life. IMPRES batteries, when used with an IMPRES charger, provide automatic, adaptive reconditioning, end-of-life display and other advanced features.

Data is stored in the battery and communicated to the charger via a unique IMPRES communication protocol which is designed to maximize talk-time and optimize battery cycle life all automatically.

Impress batteries have automated maintenance and six month extended capacity warranty when used with IMPRES chargers. The batteries can be reconditioned without being removed from the radio.

TDMA

Offers increased capacity and saves ongoing costs compared to conventional analogue networks. Previously customers would ideally use one frequency per a channel this resulted in customers purchasing additional frequencies from OFCOM.

TDMA allows you to split that frequency in 2 time slots and work simultaneously without ever interfering with each other. The time slots can be used as voice channels, data channels or mixed (voice & data).

Enhanced Digital Calling and Signalling

Motorola digital radios allow you to carry out 3 main call types:

One-to-One: You can talk privately with a specific user’s radio without the rest of the radios listening in.

e.g. You need to have a private call with management

One-to-Many: Enables communication with specific sets of group members

e.g. working in a supermarket and you need to get hold of the cleaners only

One-to-All: Allows all users on the same channel to hear the communications.

Remember with analogue there was no affective separation

All these options are available during programming of the DP1400.

Motorola R2 Accessories

Motorola R2 Charging Options

There is no single charger as standard with the radio you will have to select it from the drop down above. The radio has the options of a single unit charger that consists of a docking station and a power supply unit which the radio will slot in and is perfect for sitting on your desk.

However if you have more than one radio and to stop you taking up all your plugs they have created a 6 Port Desktop Charger, it makes it quick and simple to charge batches of radios and perfect for receptions and security offices. Staff simply drop the radios in the docker on the evening and they are charged for the morning.

The chargers also give you the capability to charge the batteries without the radios. You will see a little grove on each side of the battery and this slides into the chargers and hold the Motorola battery upright.

This makes the chargers perfect for when you are working long hours or have split shifts as you can easily purchase an additional battery to keep you going.

Motorola R2 Batteries

There are two main types of batteries Motorola Supply which are 2100T mAh Slim line and 2300T mAh Lithium Ion

The  type of battery is Lithium Ion. The batteries are normally more expensive, but they have some great benefits like longer operating time and Impress technology. The Impress batteries can communicate with the Impress Chargers and the chargers will carry out what is need on the battery to prolong its operational life. The charger will recondition the battery, top up the battery or just tell you straight away the charge in the battery. If you are running a company longer than 10 hours a day and require batteries to be charged all the time, I would Definitely recommend Lithium. Yes, they cost more but they on average last longer over time and during operational use. The higher the capacity the longer it will last. Motorola Now have batteries that will last over 20 hours.

Motorola R2 Battery

There is only one downside to Lithium batteries and that is the methods of transportation, in recent years there is a huge restriction on the transporting Lithium Batteries via Air freight. You are limited to 2 batteries per a parcel as standard. If you are purchasing for the UK market this is not an issue. We do have special licences in place to assist with Battery Air Freight but if in doubt please ask us.

Audio Accessories

There is a variety of Audio accessories available. The most popular are earpieces, headsets and Remote Speaker Microphones.

Earpieces are most commonly used by security staff; they consist of wire with a connector that connects into the radio followed by a variety of wires that lead off to the microphone and earpiece. You might hear the phrase 1 wire, 2 wire, 3 wire earpiece its very simply explained and the different configurations have been created depending on how they are supposed to be used.

1 Wire consists of a single wire that comes off the radio attached 2/3 up normally is a Pressel button with a built in Microphone. From this button/mic module the wire extends to the ear and will have an earpiece attached.

2 Wire is where the wire splits halfway up so the microphone and PTT button can be located further away from the Earpiece. This makes it easier installing it on chest rigs and in your clothing.

3 Wire is the split of the microphone, Pressel and earpiece. The 3 wires gives you the full flexibility and length of cable to install the audio accessory in body armour, clothing and enables the user to have the Pressel down the sleeve of their shirt for a more discreet method of pressing the Pressel, mic on the V neck of your shirt and earpiece leading to your neck.

Headsets
offer noise cancelling features and comfy audio accessory that sits on your head like you see in the movies, production staff or a drive thru. The headset normally has microphone attached to the headset and the Pressel is located halfway down the cable.

Walkie Talkie Headset

Remote Speaker Microphones normally consist of a thick, robust cable that comes off the radio and is fixed on the V neck of a shirt or to the side. It offers you a quick solution to transmit and communicate if need be and the speaker is located on your chest so you can hear conversations without having to unclip the radio or have an earpiece in.

Carrying Solutions

There are a variety of Motorola DP1400 carrying solutions for your handheld radio these include Belt clips, carry cases, waterproof bags, Lanyards, Utility pouches and chest rigs.

Belt clips are normally supplied with Motorola radios as standard, the slide into the battery and then offer a simple carrying solution as it clips on your belt and can be easily removed and replaced.

Motorola Belt Clip

Carry Cases have two main fixing methods either they have a toughed loop fixture on the rear that fits through you belt or a clip that connects to you belt. There are normally used by staff who move about a lot as the radio is more secure. Often when you bend over a radio with a standard belt clip with fall off.

Radio Carry Case

Waterproof bags are simple and effective way to product your radio if you work in or around the water or in wet conditions. The radio is placed in the bad you can still transmit and hear audio through the bag and it has a nice lanyard to slip over your shoulder so you can carry it with ease. I would like to say the majority of the time when the radio is dropped in the water in a waterproof bag it will float but it all depends on the weight of the radios and air trapped in the bag.

Motorola Radio Waterproof Bag

Utility Pouches or as we would call in the UK a bum bag, goes round your waist allows you to store your radios and normally you have an additional pouch to store small items.

Motorola Utility Case RLN4815A

Chest Packs/Rigs are great for security companies, police and the military. They go over your chest and enable you to locate the radio where you can access it. It is secure and you can purchase a standard chest rig or a Break-A-Way chest rig. The Break-A-Way solution enables you to escape if it is caught or grabbed.

Motorola R2 Antennas

Antennas enable the radio to transmit to it optimum ability by using antenna that is designed for a specific frequency. Motorola often offer antennas with certain frequecny bands or antennas that do the whole frequency band for that radio whether it is VHF or UHF.

Whip or Stubby Antennas

These antennas are then normally available in whip or stubby format (whip on the left pic, stubby the right pic). Stubby antennas are usually smaller than your little finger. Whip antennas are normally around 16cm depending on the brand.

If you are unsure or your frequency may change in the future, I would always suggest the antennas that cover the whole VHF or UHF band that are supplied as standard. In my opinion it will only really affect the radio at it furthest range. You can spruce it up as much as you like it is a copper wire inside rubber. I have a lot of customers who like the stubby antenna as its smaller but its personal choice.

Imagine if you want to catch rainwater its far easier catching it with a bucket than a cup. That is how I see the antennas if I want to use the antennas at the optimum. I will pick a whip antenna within the frequency bracket on my Ofcom Licence. The stubby antennas may look good but often people clip the radio to their backs, sit down in their chair and then wonder why they have difficulty receiving signals.
